Our best tips in the area

We who work at Hotel Karlaplan naturally have our own favorite places around the hotel. Here, we share some of these, be they favorite restaurants or cafés, good shops, and things to do. Now, with spring and summer approaching, we would like to recommend these places:

Paraden

This neighborhood restaurant with a cozy atmosphere and super good food is a real favorite with the staff from Hotel Karlaplan. Paraden is located in an old cinema (called Paraden) at the corner of Valhallavägen and Erik Dahlbergsgatan. The premises are charming with many nooks and crannies, in the summer there is also an outdoor seating area. The food is well prepared, with a Mediterranean touch, and you can choose between small dishes or main courses from the à la carte menu. It is also possible to just have a drink at the bar, for those who want that. On weekends, a yummy brunch is served. The restaurant is open from lunch to late at night, every day. We help you gladly to reserve a table here.

Djurgården

Djurgården is one of Stockholm's most beautiful places and many of our guests come here to visit the area. We have picked out our favorites, with an emphasis on things that families like to do when they visit Djurgården.

Gröna Lund

The well-known amusement park is an adventure for both big and small, well worth a visit or a return visit. Grönan (which it's most often is called) has rides for both big and small, restaurants, and loads of challenging games for a pentathlon amongst friends. There are also dance evenings and over 60 concerts with popular Swedish and international artists every season.

The Vasa Museum

A fascinating piece of Stockholm's and Sweden's history. Gustav II Adolf had this fantastic warship built in the year 1628. Sadly, it sank on its maiden voyage. The ship was salvaged in 1961 and is now in the exciting Vasa Museum. In addition to the ship itself, there are over 40,000 objects found around Vasa and interesting exhibitions about the people who lived in the 17th century.

ABBA The Museum

The Abba museum contains a big exhibition about Abba and an abundance of objects from the band's glory days. This is a great retrospective of one of the world's largest pop bands. A visit here constitutes a fantastic interactive experience for the whole family. Sing with the band, mix music, try on costumes and take lots of stylish selfies!

Junibacken

Junibacken is an experience-house based on Astrid Lindgren's books. Here, the characters come from the book come to life and when you ride on the fairytale train you are shown one beautiful story setting after another, from Emil's Lönneberga to Ronja's forest. The temporary exhibitions focus on other children's book heroes. In addition, there is a restaurant (with a large children's menu) and a well-stocked children's bookshop.

The Karlaplan Flea Market

During the summer months, one of Stockholm's best flea markets is just a stone's throw from our hotel. Each Saturday, 11 AM-3 PM, from the end of April to the middle of October the gravel walkway under the elm trees around the fountain fills up with flea market bargains. You'll find clothes and shoes from last year or actual vintage, you'll find collectibles and antiques. Children's clothing and sports equipment, vinyl records, and homemade cinnamon buns. The vendors are both professional antique dealers and private people and the range varies from week to week, so you should visit as often as you can!

Cassi

For those of you who like vintage, we can give you a tip on another real gem, restaurant Cassi. Cassi is an old family-owned neighborhood restaurant with a French menu, that opened its doors in 1954. The interior is mulled browns and greens, the food is served on orange plastic trays and the place revolves you back to the 1970s. But don't let the dated look fool you, the food is classic French cuisine of the highest quality and the pleasant atmosphere attracts both French residents and a large number of regulars. Observe that it is not open on Saturdays.

Karla frukt

Karla Frukt is a fruit shop that started as early as 1928 and the shop on Karlavägen was opened in the mid-1960s. The shop is a true landmark with its colorful neon sign with a big semi-peeled orange between the words ”Karla” and ”frukt”. For as long as anyone can remember, fruit has not been the only thing sold here. The children of the area know that this is a fantastic sweet shop and nowadays also a café with light lunches and wonderful handmade gelato.

Restaurant Rökeriet

Fjäderholmarna is perfect for those who want to experience the Stockholm archipelago but do not have the possibility to fit in a longer trip. In just 25 minutes you can get by boat to the island which has beautiful nature and a wonderful restaurant, Restaurant Rökeriet.

Make sure to get out here in good time so that you can experience the island and maybe go for a swim by the rocks before you eat. There has actually been a tavern on the island since the 17th century, and Fjäderholmarna's history is still visible in many places. Restaurant Rökeriet now serves its own smoked shrimps, fish, and other delicacies. Open every day during the summer and for Christmas dinners. Book a table and boat trip by contacting Rökeriet at 08-716 50 88.
